Statistical Thinking in the Kitchen: Diced Potatoes

This dialogue involves KPM, his sister-in-law AW, and his niece MW. The activity is one of dicing potatoes into cubes of a specific size. But what it illustrates is qualitative statistical thinking, i.e., statistics without numbers and calculation. The crucial issue discussed here is that of sampling. On what basis do we make a decision on the size of a random sample of a population in order to arrive at a conclusion about the population, using inductive reasoning?
